GATE Examination Structure

A candidate can apply for only ONE of the 21 papers listed in the table given below. In the tables given below, the columns titled 'Paper Title' and 'Title of the Section' provide links to the appropriate syllabus.

The choice of the appropriate paper is the responsibility of the candidate. Some guidelines in this respect are suggested below. The candidate is expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of his/her qualifying degree. The candidate is, however, free to choose any paper according to his/her admission plan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he/she wishes to seek admission. Requests for change of GATE Examination paper after the submission of Application Form will not be considered. The question paper will consist of only objective questions. In all papers other than AE, AG, AR, GG, MN and TF, all the questions are of multiple choice type. In AE, AG, AR, GG, MN and TF papers, the question paper will consist of questions of multiple choice type and also some questions of numerical answer type. For multiple choice type questions, each question will have four choices for the answer. For numerical answer type questions, each question will have a number as the answer. The examination for the papers with codes AE, AG, AR, GG, MN and TF will be carried out ONLINE using computers where the candidates will be required to enter the answer for each question using mouse. For all other papers, the candidates will have to mark the correct choice on an Optical Response Sheet (ORS) by darkening the appropriate bubble against each question. There will be negative marking for each wrong answer, except for the numerical answer type questions. Each GATE paper shall have a General Aptitude (GA) component carrying 15 marks.

How To Act During The Interview ?

 

There are many things that you can do that can take away some of the pressure during a job interview. The way that you behave is one of the most important elements. It is not all in the words that come out of your mouth, but it often has a lot to do with the mannerisms that you use.

Interviewers are not just wondering if you’re skilled enough for the job, they’re often wondering if you would fit in nicely with your co-workers. Your personality is also a big part of your job interview and may make all the difference. Here are some of the little things that you should pay especially close attention to during a job interview.

You don’t want to be chewing gum or breath mints during your interview. You also do not want to speak in slang during your interview either. It’s unprofessional and rude.

Showing Confidence

You can’t enter into an interview with a defeatist attitude. You also can’t mope or exude too much placidity in your manner. It’s not inviting, and doesn’t give the impression of a person that you may want to face every day.

Be sure of your abilities without appearing too cocky or narcissistic. You want to let you interviewer know that you’re equipped to perform well at your job, without alienating other workers. You should point out your accomplishments in your field whilst remaining somewhat humble.

List your accomplishments in a matter of fact manner without going into too much detail. I know this sounds repetitive, but you can never get this point out too strongly. Understand that body language also plays a large part in exuding confidence to others. Try to sit straight. Practice good posture, and keep your head upwards.

Keeping a Positive Attitude

You must always try to smile and keep a positive outlook during your interview. If you hear something that doesn’t sound good to you, try not to frown and look disgruntled, just keep a slight smile on your face until it’s time for you to say something. Then approach your interviewer with your questions or concerns when the time is appropriate.

Maintaining Eye Contact

Keeping eye contact with your interviewer is a very important factor, especially when one of you is speaking to the other. If you’re looking around the room or at the items on the interviewer’s desk, you’ll appear uninterested. Just imagine what you’d be thinking if you were speaking to him and he was looking all over the room. You’d probably think that you already lost the interview.

Your Body Language

We have touched on this a little bit but you should mind some of the common errors that many people make when they are speaking to others.

I have listed some of the common things that you should avoid when sitting through an interview:

• Avoid fidgeting whilst speaking to your interviewer. It shows a lack of self-confidence.

• Avoid speaking whilst using overly expressive hand gestures. It’s distracting.

• Avoid biting your lips in between your sentences. It gives the impression that you’re making things up.

• Don’t sit with your arms crossed because it makes you appear stand-offish.

• Don’t shrug your shoulders when asked a question that you’re unsure of. Take a second to think of your response. Shrugging your shoulders gives the impression that you do not know the answer.

• Do not answer with nods and head shakes. Use words to answer questions.

• Try to get plenty of sleep the night before the interview. You do not want to yawn in front of the interviewer. He’ll think that you are expressing boredom.

In many cases, acing an interview is very much like making a sale, only instead of a product, you are marketing yourself. It’s important to go into the interview knowing as much about the company you are applying to as possible in order to confidently present your skills and experience in an engaging and relevent way. Learning about your potential employer can give you an edge on other interview candidates so profound, it’s like having a list of insurance sales leads in your back pocket.

Career in Indian Army

The entry route into the Indian Army is through the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE). The UPSC conducts this CDSE twice a year — in February and August/September — to admit cadets to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, and the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. CDSE also admits cadets to the Navy and Air Force — for which you require either a BSc (physics/maths) or a BE/BTech.

The eligibility criteria and the pattern of the exam is as follows:
For IMA: Unmarried males with Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
For OTA (SSC course): Married or unmarried males with Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.

Selection is on the basis of an objective type written exam followed by SSB tests and interview for those who qualify the written exam. The intelligence and personality tests essentially cover outdoor, group and psychological activities.
The written exam is held at various centres all over the country and consists of three papers for admission to IMA, Naval and Air Force Academy. The examination for OTA consists of only the first two papers.

Paper I tests your English.
Paper II tests your general knowledge of current events and general science. Also, it includes questions on geography and history of India.
Paper III tests your knowledge of elementary mathematics, arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, mensuration and statistics.

You can take the general knowledge and maths papers in English or Hindi.

Each paper is of two-hours and carries 100 marks. There is negative marking for wrong answers.

Once you clear the written tests you will proceed to the next stage, which is conducted by the Service Selection Board. The SSB tests evaluate your potential and aptitude in terms of reasoning, intelligence, communication skills, courage, initiative, confidence, responsibility, social adaptability, decision-making and organisational ability to see if you possess ‘officer-like’ qualities. The tests call for average intelligence and are conducted at designated army selection centres.

Score 90 in Class XII for a direct entry to Oxford University

 

City schools have welcomed the news that CBSE and ICSE Class XII exam toppers will get direct entry into the prestigious Oxford University’s undergraduate courses. The UK varsity’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Andrew Hamilton, who is currently touring India, made an announcement to this effect in Kharagpur near Kolkata on Saturday.

Students who score more than 90 per cent marks in Class XII exams will be eligible to seek admissions directly from the September 2013 session. More significantly, they will not have to sit for A-level, SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) or any other international exams to get admission into Oxford. They will, however, need to take the qualifying test conducted by Oxford University before final selection.Admissions will open from September 2013 and the course fee will be 15,000 pounds a year.
